Project Overview

Illustra Health is a Johns Hopkins University population health startup that focuses on providing the necessary tools and analytics to hospitals and clinics to provide value-based care to patients and thrive in population health management.

As part of the team, I worked closely with the CEO, CTO, and population health strategists to design and develop Illustra Health’s first website, ensuring that it effectively communicated the company’s mission and services while providing a seamless and engaging user experience. My role encompassed user research, UX/UI design, and front-end development, working iteratively with leadership to align the website with strategic business objectives.

Problem

As a startup, Illustra Health did not initially have a website, so they needed a professional, intuitive, and informative platform that could:

Project Details

Design Goal

The goal was to create a website that would:

  • Provide a clear, professional, and engaging online presence.
  • Improve user experience with streamlined navigation and accessibility.
  • Establish trust with healthcare professionals through compelling content and design.
  • Ensure scalability for future integrations and features.

Target Users

  • Hospital Administrators and Executives – Seeking insights and analytics for value-based care.
  • Healthcare Providers – Interested in tools to improve patient outcomes.
  • Investors and Partners – Exploring potential collaborations and funding opportunities.
  • Patients and General Audience – Looking for general information on population health initiatives.

Design & Development Process

Research and Prototyping

  • Conducted competitor analysis to benchmark design and functionality.
  • Defined the information architecture to ensure intuitive navigation.
  • Organized the site content and defined the hierarchy of information using wireframes.
  • Designed intuitive concepts using existing corporate and product guidelines.

UX Design & Visual Identity

Since this was the company’s first website, we needed to create a cohesive design language from scratch. The focus was on:

  • Prioritizing Primary Interactions: Key calls-to-action (e.g., “Schedule a Demo”) were made prominent.
  • Optimized Navigation: A clear menu structure made information easily accessible.
  • Healthcare Branding: A clean, modern aesthetic with professional typography and color schemes that align with industry standards.
  • Scalability: A modular design system that allows for future expansion.
  • Leveraging A.I. and Other Tools: Used AI and other tools to create and modify web assets such as banners, buttons, and videos.

Development & Implementation

  • Planned, designed, built, and deployed Illustra Health’s first website from the ground up.
  • Developed a responsive website optimized for desktop and mobile users.
  • Integrated SEO best practices to improve visibility.
  • Ensured compliance with web accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1).
  • Tested design layouts to ensure browser and device compatibility (responsive design).

Style / Design Systems

To ensure the components are implemented consistently across the site, I created a UI guide with details on color palettes, typography, and reusable UI elements.

Final Takeaways

User research is essential in creating an intuitive and engaging experience.

Building a website from the ground up requires close collaboration with leadership to ensure alignment with business goals.
